The merchant navy, a vital industry that facilitates global trade, offers a plethora of opportunities for individuals seeking a challenging and rewarding career. Among the various courses available, the Diploma in Nautical Science (DNS) stands out as the most preferred course.
Embarking on a journey in the merchant navy is an exciting prospect for many aspiring seafarers. One of the most effective pathways to achieving this goal is through the Diploma in Nautical Science (DNS). This one-year program not only equips cadets with essential theoretical knowledge but also provides practical skills that are crucial for a successful career on the high seas.

ABOUT DIPLOMA IN NAUTICAL SCIENCE
The DNS program consists of two semesters filled with comprehensive training that covers various aspects of maritime operations. After completing the course, cadets are required to undergo 18 months of sea training, where they gain invaluable hands-on experience aboard ships.

This phase is not only educational but also financially beneficial, as cadets receive a stipend along with free boarding and lodging during their training.
Post-Sea Training and Certification
Upon completing 18 months of onboard training, cadets must obtain an SSTP completion certificate from their institute and sit for IMU Semester III, IV, and V exams.
*Preparing for Second Mate Examination*
Next, cadets undergo 4 months of shore-based post-sea training (Semester VI), which prepares them for the Second Mate examination conducted by the Directorate-General of Shipping (DGS). This training takes place at approved institutes.
*Mandatory STCW Courses*
In addition to the post-sea training, cadets must complete mandatory STCW courses, including:
- – ROC/ARPA
- – GMDSS
- – PSCR
- – AFF
- – MFA
- – ECDIS
These courses, which take approximately 2 months to complete, are essential for obtaining the Second Mate (Foreign Going) license.
*Certification and Degree*
Upon successfully passing the Second Mate examination and completing the STCW courses, cadets are awarded the Second Mate (F.G) Certificate of Competency by the D.G. Shipping, Govt. of India. This certification qualifies them to join any seagoing vessel as a third officer.
After completing all six semesters, cadets are awarded a degree in (link unavailable) (Applied Nautical Science), marking the culmination of their academic and practical training.
