IMU-CET, aka Indian Maritime University Common Entrance test is an online center based test conducted by the IMU for the applicable UG courses (DNS, BSC NS, B.Tech. ME, etc.).

Even those with more than 3,000 ranks have no chance to get into govt. colleges and those with more than 6,000 ranks have less chances for sponsorship. Therefore, one must take the exam seriously.
Understanding IMU-CET 2025
What is IMU-CET 2025?
IMU-CET is the basic requirement to be eligible for any applicable UG course provided by IMU. It is conducted once a year.

It is advisable to attempt a minimum of 120 correct questions to get a decent rank and have all the options.

Vision Should be 6/6 without aids. Vision correction methods like Contura Vision and LASIK is allowed.
Color Blindness is not permitted.
P.S. If 12th result is obtained after improvement examination, the board should be same as of the 1st time.

Common Challenges Faced By Aspirants
Due to lack of awareness about IMU-CET, the aspirants fail to conclude about the level of examination until last moment. The examination level is easy but the constant changing pattern of the IMU-CET makes the test unpredictable. One must be thorough with the NCERT of PCM and practice the basic topics of English and Aptitude to be on a safe side.
Additionally, the fake sample papers, guaranteed question paper, etc. a few days before examinations should be condemned.
Effective Preparation Strategies For IMU-CET 2025
Creating a Study Plan
Whenever it is a competitive exam, a study plan must be deduced and should be such that it is realistic. IMU-CET is a common entrance test for which rigorous preparation is not required. The revision of class 11th and 12th PCM and practicing of Aptitude and English questions is sufficient.
Moreover, since IMU-CET is not a popular exam and thus may come into knowledge in the very last moment and thus the plans should be made accordingly.
A sample plan that fits to all can be
1. Watch one-shot videos of PCM from You-tube of all the chapters and make short notes.
2. Make a formula list of all the chapters.
3. Solve MCQ questions of Aptitude and English from google from various website.
Setting Realistic Goals
The target to get AIR 1 and attempting 200 questions may sometimes feel achievable and proud but the capricious nature of the exam makes it hard. Moreover, a candidate with IMU-CET rank 1 and without company sponsorship is in a worse state than a candidate with IMU-CET rank 14,000 and a company sponsorship. Therefore, the goal must be scoring a decent rank, i.e. 1000-4000 and getting a sponsorship form a reputed company.
Allocating Time For Each Subject
If we talk about planning, allocating time for each subject is necessary and depends on the personal choice. There is no hard and fast rule of giving specific hours to a particular subject. One must introspect and decide which subject requires more time and plan accordingly.
Since Physics and Mathematics holds the majority, these two must be given ample time in comparison to Chemistry.
English and Aptitude holds a very high percentage of questions and thus should be given adequate time as of PCM subjects.
Recommended study materials and resources
The following books may be used as a reference while preparing for the examination:
NCERT for PCM of class 11th and 12th.
Wren and Martin for English.
Test of Reasoning by Arihant for Aptitude.

Overview of DNS Sponsorship
DNS, i.e. Diploma in Nautical Science leads to BSc. Applied Nautical Science after completion of 1 year pre-sea training, 18 months of sea time and a few months of port sea training.

For sponsorship, one has to go through the company specific procedure which includes Online/Offline MCQ test, Online/Physical Interview, Medical from a DG Approved doctor.
Key Eligibility criteria for DNS Sponsorship
The Eligibility criteria for DNS Sponsorship is company specific. The basic criteria to be eligible for being eligible in at least one shipping company is the criteria of IMU-CET.
The Minimum Eligibility Criteria is
12th PCM % >= 60

However, the companies prefer candidates with 70 PCM and above. Some companies like Anglo Eastern and Fleet management’s minimum eligibility criteria is 70 PCM and some companies who doesn’t disclose the criteria and take candidates on the basis of their CV prefer candidates with higher PCM which is obvious.
However, one must not be worried if their PCM is less than 70 as companies like Synergy, MSC, Great Eastern, Seven Islands, Shipping Corporation of India, etc. accepts lower PCM too. The key factor in these companies are the interview performance.
Application Process And Important Deadlines
Different companies have different selection procedure and thus also have different ways to take application. Some companies like Anglo Eastern, Great Eastern, Seven Islands, Executive Ship Management, etc. releases their own form while other companies like Scorpio Tankers, Torm Tankers, Wallem, etc. takes candidates through various maritime institutes which releases their form on the behalf of these companies.
For August Batch, the form starts coming from January of the same year.
For February Batch, the form starts coming from September of the previous year.

Therefore, adequate focus must be distributed to both IMU-CET and Sponsorship Preparation. - Time Management tips
Out of 24 hrs in a day, 6 hrs. must be taken out for preparation rigorously. The first 4 hours for PCM subjects, 1.5 hrs. for Interview Preparation and Communication Enhancement & remaining half hour for giving mock interview.

- IMU-CET is a center based online test. The result is declared within a fortnight of exam.
- IMU-CET is conducted only once per year.
- IMU CET has negative marking of 0.25 per wrong attempt.

- IMU does not release their previous year question papers.
