For years, the Indian Maritime University Common Entrance Test (IMU-CET) has been the gateway for students dreaming of a career in the Merchant Navy. Whether it’s pursuing B.Sc Nautical Science, DNS (Diploma in Nautical Science), Marine Engineering, B.Tech Marine Engineering, or other maritime programs , IMU-CET has always been the first major step toward life at sea.
But now, things are changing.
The competition is no longer what it used to be.
With over 1 lakh+ students registered for IMU-CET 2026, the exam is evolving into a serious national-level competitive examination similar in intensity to JEE, NEET, and CUET. Aspirants are preparing earlier, coaching ecosystems are growing rapidly, and students are realizing that securing a top rank is becoming more difficult every year.
And with this rising competition, IMU has officially introduced a normalization process for IMU-CET 2026.

Why IMU-CET 2026 Is Different
According to the latest IMU circular, the examination will now be conducted in two shifts on 24 May 2026 for UG courses (except BBA).
Official Exam Schedule
- First Shift: 10:00 AM – 1:00 PM
- Second Shift: 2:30 PM – 5:30 PM
The allotted shift will be mentioned on the candidate’s admit card.
This is a major sign that the number of applicants has increased massively. Conducting the exam in multiple shifts is something usually seen in large-scale competitive exams where candidate volume is extremely high.
That alone shows one thing clearly:
Merchant Navy education is becoming mainstream.
Students from across India are now considering maritime careers because of:
- High salary packages
- International exposure
- Tax-free income opportunities
- Fast career growth
- Adventure and travel
- Technical and management opportunities
What Courses Can You Pursue Through IMU-CET?
IMU-CET is the entrance examination for multiple Merchant Navy and maritime UG programs, including:
- B.Sc Nautical Science
- DNS (Diploma in Nautical Science)
- B.Tech Marine Engineering
- B.Tech Naval Architecture & Ocean Engineering
- BBA Logistics, Retailing & E-Commerce
- Other maritime and shipping-related programs
These courses lead students into careers such as:

The Biggest IMU CET 2026 Update: Normalization Process Introduced
Since IMU-CET 2026 will be held in two shifts, there is always a possibility that one paper may be slightly tougher or easier than the other.
To ensure fairness, IMU has introduced a Percentile-Based Normalization System. This means your final merit will not depend only on raw marks.
Instead, it will depend on your percentile score compared to students who appeared in the same shift.
What Is Percentile Normalization?
In simple words:
Your percentile tells how many students scored equal to or below you in your shift.
For example:
- If your percentile is 95, it means you performed better than 95% of students in your shift.
- The topper of every shift will automatically get a percentile of 100. This system is already used in major Indian exams like:
- JEE Main
- CAT
- CUET
- Other national-level entrance tests
Now IMU-CET joins that category.
Why IMU Introduced This System
Imagine this situation:
- Shift 1 paper is difficult
- Shift 2 paper is easier
Without normalization, students from the tougher shift would score lower marks unfairly. To avoid this, IMU will convert raw marks into percentile scores.
This creates a level playing field for all candidates.
According to the official notification:
- Percentile scores will be calculated up to 7 decimal places
- Merit lists will be prepared using normalized percentile scores
- Eligibility cutoffs will also be based on percentiles
This is a major step toward making IMU-CET more professional and competitive.
IMU-CET Is No Longer an “Easy Backup Exam”

That trend is changing rapidly.

- Awareness about maritime careers is increasing
With 1 lakh+ registrations, even small mistakes can push ranks significantly down. Students now need:
