Mediterranean Shipping Co. (MSC)

Mediterranean Shipping Company is an ownership shipping company established in 1970. It has containers, car carriers and bulk carriers. The company has around 800 container ships. It does not have their own training institute and thus refers the candidate to an institute which is affiliated to them, i.e. International Maritime Institute (IMI Noida), Seven Islands Institute of Maritime Studies (SISL, Maharashtra), School Of Maritime Studies (SOMS, Chennai).

Company Speciality

  1. Stipend for Deck Cadet: 370$/month (FIXED); 420$/month after 12 month sea time.
  2. Sea-time Required: 18 months
  3. Contract Duration: 1st Ship- 9 months; 2nd Ship- 9 months;
  4. Waiting period: 1/2 months for 1st ship; No waiting for next ship.
  5. Limited Internet. Unlimited internet connection for 6 hours per day.
  6. IMUmateā€™s Preference: No. 5

Eligibility Criteria

  • 12th PCM % >= 65 %
  • 10th or 12th English % >= 50
  • Age before commencement of course <= 19
  • Valid Passport in-hand before course commencement
  • Vision Should be 6/6 without aids. Vision correction methods like Cantura Vision and LASIK is allowed.
  • Colour Blindness is not permitted. 

Note:

  • If 12th result is obtained after improvement examination, the candidate is eligible to apply. 
  • If 12th result is obtained from NIOS Board, the candidate is eligible to apply. 
  • Eligibility for BSc. 
    1. Physics should be an individual subject any of the year in BSc.
    2. Average percentage not less than 60% in final year
    3. Candidates who have completed their BSc. in Nautical Science are Not Eligible to apply for DNS.
  • Eligibility for BE/B.Tech. Degree
    1. Average percentage not less than 55% in final year

How to apply for DNS Sponsorship program? 

MSC conducts their selection procedure independently. Once sponsored, MSC allots the institute as per their convenience and  the candidate is obligated to do their pre-sea course from the same. Once the pre-sea is completed, MSC allots the vessel. In conjugation with the institute and the company, a candidate completes their sea-time and pre/post sea courses and head to 2nd mates exams and BSc. in App. Nautical Science Degree.

There are two batches for which the selection procedure is conducted round the year. 

  1. August Batch: 80 Seats
  2. February Batch: As per the requirement

P.S. MSCā€™s selection procedure is conducted once per year. If the requirements are there, MSC offers a seat to the candidates in the waiting list of selected candidates.

Selection Procedure 

During form filling, one of the five sate slots for giving online entrance has to be chosen by the candidate. The company further communicates via email about the further procedure which includes a mock test (for familiarization with exam window) and then the main exam on the selected date.

Note: The exam AI is very sensitive and thus a slight incongruous movement / unwanted sound / unstable internet connection gets the candidate terminated from the exam. Also, human proctor is recently introduced which monitors the candidate individually.  

Many glitches may occur due to issues from both ends and thus the MSC management makes sure that if any candidate faced it, they may get a re-attempt. All one needs to do is write their problem in the email given initially in the acknowledgement for filling the form. 

The selection procedure of MSC comprises of two stages:

Time: 90 minutes
Proctor: AI and Human
Subject:English, Aptitude, GK, PCM (Class 11th and 12th)
MSCā€™s cut offs goes as high as 43-45 out of 50.

One must choose the earlier dates (1st,2nd or 3rd) for giving their exams as per IMUmateā€™s opinion. 

Physical Interview Round
The Physical round of interview is conducted in various centres allocated by MSC. The centres are in various cities round the India including Delhi, Patna, Lucknow, Mumbai, Kolkata and Chennai. 

The MSC takes interview of more than 1000 candidates on an avg. per batch and selects not more than 80. 

Candidates may be shifted to the next batch if the selected candidates do not get a seat in August batch.

Also, if required, the candidates in the waiting list of selected candidates may get a chance in the next batch. 

The selected candidates get the email for further procedures in slots until the seats are filled. Therefore, one must keep patient until the end. No rejection email will be received.
